The origin of the city's name is unclear. Early Lynchburg was also home to a large tannery. Long, was operating a gristmill and cotton gin. By the 1830s, another settler, William P. One early settler, Thomas Roundtree, established a cotton mill along the creek in the vicinity of the modern Jack Daniel's Distillery. Residences were generally located in the western half of Lynchburg, while industries were situated along the creek in the eastern half. Main Street was originally the main road, and roughly followed the route of East Fork Mulberry Creek. White settlers first arrived in the Lynchburg area around 1801. The downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Lynchburg Historic District. Lynchburg is part of the Tullahoma–Manchester micropolitan area. Lynchburg's connection to Jack Daniel's is spoofed in a 2018 national television commercial in which the city is nominated for an NBA franchise. The population was 6,461 at the 2020 census. Sampling whiskey is permitted in the distillery, however. Despite the operational distillery, which is a major tourist attraction, Lynchburg's home county of Moore is a dry county. Lynchburg is best known as the location of Jack Daniel's, whose famous Tennessee whiskey is marketed worldwide as the product of a city with only one traffic light. It is governed by a consolidated city-county government unit whose boundaries coincide with those of Moore County. John’s mother Mary Toomey Hatcher taught him the family art of fermentation, including wine and beer making. (John’s father Eulas was the child tasked to cross the field to fetch the medicinal elixir from Maxie, the owner of the area’s largest still.). He heard about stills smashed in government raids, and of a grumpy great-grandmother, whose daily cup of moonshine spirits improved her disposition. John Michael Hatcher grew up in Smiths Grove, KY, hearing yore of the Toomey still, and tales of nearby moonshiners. John Toomey’s son, Robert, John’s grandfather, worked as a young man in the family distillery, until it was permanently shut down by Prohibition. As a young man, he moved to Kentucky and operated his own distillery near the community of Summer Shade. He landed in Lexington Courthouse, Virginia, where he learned the craft of distilling spirits in the Irish tradition. That was the same year that John Toomey, a young child orphaned by the Irish Potato Famine, emigrated from Cork County, Ireland. Gobbler Springs operates the first legal still in Lawrence County since David Crockett’s washed away in a flood in 1821. John is a fourth-generation distiller born in Glasgow, KY, whose Irish roots reach back to his great grandfather, John Michael Toomey.
